Description
The 1875 medal GW-857 in bronze commemorates Washington's assumption of military command with the inscription "Assumed Command," referring to his acceptance of the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on June 15, 1775. The 1875 date marks the centennial of this pivotal event. GW-857 was produced as part of the nationwide celebrations marking hundredth anniversaries of the American Revolution. The "Assumed Command" inscription focuses on Washington accepting military responsibility for the colonial cause. Bronze was the standard composition for centennial commemorative medals. George Washington is the most depicted figure in American numismatics, appearing on coins, medals, tokens, and decorative pieces from the Revolutionary era through the present day, creating one of the most extensive and varied collecting areas in the field. GW-857 contributes to the rich medallic record of the 1875-1876 centennial period.
