Description
This silver medal cataloged as JAB-27 on a thick planchet depicts Andrew Jackson as the "Old Soldier" and was produced by John Adams Bolen circa 1867. The thick planchet designation distinguishes this variety from thin-planchet strikings, a distinction Bolen collectors track carefully as it affects both rarity and appearance. Jackson earned the "Old Hickory" and "Old Soldier" sobriquets through his military career, particularly his decisive victory at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815. The silver composition on a thick planchet represents one of the premium formats in Bolen's production hierarchy, combining precious metal content with substantial heft. Bolen typically produced even fewer thick-planchet strikings than standard pieces, making this variant among the scarcest incarnations of JAB-27. The obverse features Jackson in military bearing, while the reverse carries appropriate inscriptions.
Rarity Notes
J.A. Bolen silver medal on thick planchet — among the scarcest variants of JAB-27. Thick-planchet silver pieces were produced in quantities well under 25.
