1866 Token - Token E.H. Durfee Copper Trade
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 1866 copper trade token was issued by E.H. Durfee, the same merchant who produced the brass version cataloged separately. The copper composition represents an alternative metal striking of the same or similar design, providing collectors with a two-metal variety set. Copper trade tokens of the immediate post-Civil War period bridge the gap between the emergency Civil War token issues of 1862-1864 and the established trade token tradition that would flourish in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Durfee's production of tokens in multiple metals indicates he was aware of the numismatic collector market in addition to the practical commercial function of trade tokens. The existence of both brass and copper versions indicates deliberate variety creation rather than purely utilitarian commercial token production.
Rarity Notes
