Description
This copper medalet cataloged as JAB-27 depicts Andrew Jackson, the seventh President, and was produced by John Adams Bolen circa 1865. Jackson remained a towering figure in American political mythology throughout the nineteenth century, celebrated as a champion of the common man and vilified for his authoritarian tendencies and role in Indian removal. Bolen's presidential portrait series placed Jackson alongside Lincoln, Jefferson, and Washington in a personal medallic gallery of national leadership. The copper composition produces a warm reddish-brown tone many collectors find attractive. As with all Bolen productions, the quantity struck was extremely limited, with individual compositions typically numbering fewer than twenty-five pieces. The medalet format — smaller than a full medal — was designed for personal carrying or intimate cabinet display. Jackson's portrait as the "Old Soldier" honored his military career, particularly the decisive victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.
