Description
The 1864 token Baker-363 commemorates the Great Central Fair held in Pennsylvania. This Sanitary Fair token served as a souvenir of one of the Civil War's most successful fundraising events, supporting the United States Sanitary Commission's work providing medical care to Union soldiers. The Great Central Fair was held in Philadelphia in June 1864 and was among the largest wartime Sanitary Fairs. The fair featured exhibition halls, art galleries, historical displays, and entertainment, all designed to attract visitors whose spending would fund the Commission. Tokens and medals were among the many souvenirs offered for sale. Baker-363 documents this fair within the Baker catalog. The Washington portrait served the dual purpose of patriotic inspiration and commercial appeal. The piece bridges multiple collecting fields including Washingtoniana, Civil War tokens, and Sanitary Fair memorabilia.
