Description

The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-176/271b (GW-640) in brass features an equestrian portrait of Washington paired with a "Union Forever" reverse. Die 176 presents Washington on horseback, while die 271 carries the "Union Forever" legend — a slight textual variation from the "Union For Ever" found on related dies. The equestrian Washington portrait was one of the more ambitious designs attempted by Civil War token die sinkers, requiring considerable skill to render a mounted figure at cent size. The resulting image captures the essential elements of the equestrian tradition — the commanding pose, the spirited horse, and the rider's military bearing. Brass composition gives this equestrian token a golden warmth. Collectors who specialize in equestrian-type Civil War tokens pursue all the variants, comparing different artistic interpretations of Washington on horseback.
