Description

The 1863 Civil War patriotic token F-107/432d (GW-654) in copper-nickel bears the inscription "No Compromise With Traitors," one of the most forceful political messages found on patriotic tokens. The Washington portrait obverse (die 107) paired with this uncompromising pro-Union reverse created a powerful propaganda piece that circulated as emergency currency throughout the North. The "No Compromise With Traitors" slogan reflected the hardline Unionist position that rejected any negotiated settlement with the Confederacy. By placing this militant message opposite Washington's portrait, the token's designers implicitly claimed Washington's authority for the unconditional preservation of the Union. The "d" suffix designates copper-nickel composition. Copper-nickel was the alloy used for the federal Indian Head cent from 1859-1864, making it a natural if uncommon choice for cent-sized private tokens. The alloy's light color and hardness distinguish copper-nickel tokens from the more common copper pieces.

Rarity Notes
