Description

This copper medal cataloged as GW-519 was produced circa 1863 by Robert Lovett Jr. and depicts the statue of Washington in New York. Lovett was one of the most talented private die sinkers in nineteenth-century America, responsible for hundreds of medals, tokens, and even the infamous Confederate cent. This medal depicts the 1856 equestrian statue of Washington by Henry Kirke Brown in Union Square, which had quickly become one of New York City's most prominent public monuments. Lovett's rendering captures the statue within its urban setting, combining portrait medalmaking with architectural and sculptural documentation. The copper composition and circa 1863 date place this during the Civil War, when images of Washington took on particular significance as symbols of national unity. Lovett's workshop in Philadelphia produced pieces of exceptional technical quality, and his Washington medals are prized for their detailed engraving and careful die preparation.
