Description
This copper medalet cataloged as GW-444, struck from the second reverse die with a Paquet obverse, produced circa 1862. Anthony C. Paquet's Washington portrait dies were among the finest produced at the U.S. Mint during the Civil War era, and they were used in numerous die combinations to create a family of related Washington medals and medalets. The "2nd Rev" designation indicates this piece uses a later reverse die paired with Paquet's obverse, creating a die variety that appeals to specialists in the Washington medal series. The medalet format — smaller than a standard medal but larger than a token — was a popular size for collectible commemoratives that could be carried as pocket pieces. Paquet's portrait of Washington on these medalets demonstrates the same technical precision he brought to his coinage work, including the famous tall-lettered reverse for the 1861 Double Eagle. Copper was the standard medium for medalets intended for collector distribution.
