Description
This brass medal cataloged as GW-495, struck from the second obverse die, depicts Washington's headquarters "No. 8 Sufferns," produced circa 1862. Suffern, New York (now Suffern in Rockland County), served as one of Washington's headquarters during the later stages of the New York campaigns. The area around Suffern was strategically important for monitoring British movements in the Hudson Highlands and maintaining communication between the main Continental Army and units operating in New Jersey and Connecticut. Washington's use of Suffern as a headquarters was less dramatic than Valley Forge or Tappan but reflects the reality that the commander-in-chief moved frequently throughout the war, establishing temporary command posts wherever the tactical situation required. This medal continues the headquarters series' comprehensive documentation of Washington's wartime movements, recording even the lesser-known sites that played important logistical roles in the Continental Army's operations.
Rarity Notes
GW-495, brass, 2nd Obverse. Headquarters No. 8, Sufferns. Lesser-known site makes this a more obscure entry in the series.
