Description
This brass medal cataloged as GW-490, struck from the second obverse die, depicts Washington's headquarters "No. 3 Chad's Ford," produced circa 1862. Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, was the site of the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, one of the largest engagements of the Revolutionary War. Washington established his command post near Chadds Ford on Brandywine Creek to block the British advance on Philadelphia, but General Howe's flanking maneuver resulted in an American defeat that led to the British occupation of the Continental capital. Despite the loss, Washington's army retreated in good order, and the battle demonstrated that American forces could stand against regular British troops in a major engagement. The headquarters series documents this critical moment in the Philadelphia campaign alongside the other command posts Washington occupied during the war's middle years. The brass composition and consistent second-obverse die state across the series suggest these were produced as a matched set for collectors.
