(1860) Silver Medal DeWitt WHH-E, W.H. Harrison
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1860 silver medal, cataloged as DeWitt WHH-E, is the silver striking of the William Henry Harrison commemorative medal reissued during the 1860 campaign era. Silver strikings of political medals were produced in much smaller quantities than bronze versions, intended for presentation to prominent supporters or for collectors willing to pay a premium. Harrison's image carried political resonance in 1860 because the Republican Party had absorbed many former Whigs who remembered the 1840 campaign as a model of successful populist electioneering. The silver composition gives this medal substantially greater intrinsic value and visual appeal than its bronze counterpart (PCGS #967486), with the white metal surface providing sharper contrast for the portrait details and inscriptions. Silver political medals from the pre-Civil War era are considerably scarcer than base-metal versions and are prized by collectors of both numismatic material and political Americana.
Rarity Notes
DeWitt WHH-E in silver. Significantly scarcer than the bronze version. Silver political medals were produced in limited quantities for presentation and collector purposes. Premium variety within the Harrison medal series.
