Description
The 1860 California Gold quarter, cataloged as X-Tn3 in the territorial token series, is a small gold quarter-denomination piece from the later period of California private gold coinage. By 1860, the San Francisco Mint had been operating for six years and was producing substantial quantities of federal gold and silver coinage, but small privately struck gold pieces continued to circulate as convenient pocket money and novelty items throughout California. The X-Tn3 quarter represents the evolving role of privately struck California gold pieces. While the earliest territorial gold tokens (1849-1854) served a genuine monetary necessity in the absence of federal coinage, pieces produced after the establishment of the San Francisco Mint filled a different niche — serving as souvenirs, jewelry pieces, gaming tokens, or supplementary small change in communities where federal fractional currency remained scarce. The date shown in quotation marks, "1860," indicates the actual date of production may be undocumented. The California fractional gold tradition continued well into the 1880s, producing thousands of small gold pieces in denominations from twenty-five cents through one dollar. The X-Tn3 quarter falls into the broader territorial token classification rather than the standard BG (Breen-Gillio) fractional gold numbering system, indicating it may differ in some respect from the typical California fractional gold pieces — in design, issuer, or intended purpose.
Rarity Notes
