Description
This silver restrike of the Guadeloupe Fortified medal (Betts-148) was produced at the Paris Mint during the 1860-79 restrike period. The original medal commemorated the fortification and defense of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, one of France's most valuable sugar-producing colonies. Guadeloupe was repeatedly contested between France and England during the colonial wars, and its defense was a matter of considerable strategic importance. The silver composition makes this restrike significantly scarcer than bronze versions. The Betts series documents the full arc of European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere, from the earliest Spanish exploration medals through the diplomatic pieces marking American independence. French Caribbean colonial medals form a distinct sub-specialty within the Betts catalog, documenting the fierce competition for the wealthy sugar islands that generated enormous revenue for European crowns.
