Description
This copper medal cataloged as GW-254 with reeded edge is the copper composition variant of the Siege of Boston commemorative, produced circa 1859. While the brass version (PCGS #788481) imitates the warmth of gold, this copper striking offers a more traditional medallic appearance that develops a rich brown patina over time. The Siege of Boston represents one of Washington's defining moments โ transforming a ragged collection of New England militias into a force capable of driving the British army from one of the colonies' most important cities. The design commemorates this achievement through Washington's portrait and imagery related to the siege operations. Copper was the most common composition for mid-nineteenth century collector medals, as it reproduced die details sharply and was inexpensive enough for broad distribution. Collectors of the GW series often pursue specimens in multiple metals from the same die pair, making both the brass and copper versions of GW-254 desirable components of a comprehensive Washington medal collection.
Rarity Notes
