Description
This copper medal, cataloged as GW-228, features a second obverse die paired with the "Sprite and Sea Serpent" reverse, produced circa 1858. The copper composition distinguishes this from the brass and white metal versions of the same die combination. Copper provides excellent detail reproduction and develops an attractive brown patina over time, making it a preferred medium for collectors who value aesthetic qualities. The Sprite and Sea Serpent mule combines the gravitas of a Washington portrait with the fantastical imagery of a mythological marine scene, creating one of the most distinctive and conversation-provoking pieces in the Washington medal series. The second obverse die pairing creates a specific variety within the GW-228 group, distinguished from other obverse-reverse combinations by die characteristics visible under magnification. Mule medals of this type were typically produced in small quantities, as their novelty rather than their historical significance was the primary selling point.
Rarity Notes
Rare. The copper version of the Sprite and Sea Serpent mule with second obverse is scarce. Collector interest in the unusual reverse design supports strong demand when examples appear.
