Description
The 1855 (S) Seated Liberty Quarter - Arrows, BM is a special strike quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Seated Liberty Quarters 1838-1891 series. With a mintage of 2, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $276,000 SP64 CAC 08-11-2011 Heritage Auctions.
