(1845-1860) Bronze Medal Betts-72, Quebec Preserved
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This bronze restrike of another Quebec Preserved variant (Betts-72) was struck at the Paris Mint during the 1845-60 period. Like Betts-70, this medal celebrates the French repulse of Sir William Phips's English expedition against Quebec in October 1690. The Betts-72 variant features a different reverse design from Betts-70, though both commemorate the same event. The siege of Quebec was a pivotal moment in the colonial conflicts between France and England in North America — had Phips succeeded, the entire course of French colonial history would have been altered. Louis XIV commissioned multiple medal variants to broadcast the victory throughout the European courts, a common practice of seventeenth-century diplomatic propaganda. The Paris Mint restrike makes this historically significant design available to nineteenth-century and modern collectors.
