Description
This silver striking of the 1841 Daniel Webster token was produced as a premium or presentation piece rather than for circulation. The silver composition elevates this token from the realm of everyday commerce into that of commemorative or political medals, and the 29mm diameter is slightly larger than the standard 28mm copper version, indicating the use of a different planchet stock. Silver Webster tokens were presented to political allies, prominent Whig donors, or to Webster himself. The tradition of striking commemorative pieces in precious metals for presentation to political figures has deep roots in American numismatics, dating back to the Congressional gold medals of the Revolutionary era. By the 1840s, the practice had become sufficiently democratized that private manufacturers could produce silver presentation tokens alongside their commercial copper output. The survival of silver Hard Times Tokens in any quantity reflects the care with which these pieces were preserved. Unlike copper tokens that circulated heavily and suffered corresponding wear, silver presentation pieces were typically placed in collections or stored as keepsakes, resulting in higher average surviving grades. However, the much smaller original production means that silver Webster tokens remain rare despite their better preservation.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Silver strikings are seldom encountered. Approximately 10-20 examples survive across all grades.
