(1841) Silver Token GW-163, Plain Edge Tyrant Alcohol, 2nd Dies
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silver token with plain edge, cataloged as GW-163, is a plain-edge variant of the "Tyrant Alcohol" temperance medal from second dies, produced circa 1841. The plain-edge silver version differs from the holed reeded-edge silver GW-163 in its edge treatment, suggesting either a different production batch or intentional variety creation. The absence of a hole on some specimens (or presence of one added later) may indicate that this particular piece was not originally intended for wearing but rather for collecting or presentation. The silver composition and "Tyrant Alcohol" theme link this piece to the broader series of temperance medals that invoked Washington's name and image in support of the anti-alcohol crusade. Silver plain-edge examples represent one of the scarcer varieties within the GW-163 die pairing, as most second-die Tyrant Alcohol pieces were produced in base metals for wider distribution.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Silver plain-edge examples of the GW-163 second dies are among the less common varieties in the Tyrant Alcohol series.
