Description
This Harrison campaign token is designated DeWitt WHH-1840-43 and features the inscription "Maj. Gen. W.H. Harrison" emphasizing the candidate's military rank and service record. Harrison's status as a major general and hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and the Battle of the Thames (1813) was central to his political appeal, following the successful template of Andrew Jackson's own rise to the presidency on the strength of military fame. The "Maj. Gen." title on the token deliberately invoked the martial glory that Americans traditionally associated with presidential leadership. Of the nine presidents who had served before Harrison, five—Washington, Monroe, Jackson, and the two Harrisons (including William Henry's grandfather Benjamin Harrison V)—had significant military backgrounds. The military-hero-as-president tradition was deeply embedded in American political culture. Harrison's military record was genuine and distinguished. At Tippecanoe, he had defeated a confederation of Native American forces organized by Tecumseh and his brother Tenskwatawa. At the Thames in 1813, he commanded the American forces that killed Tecumseh and effectively ended British-Native American military resistance in the Northwest Territory. These achievements, burnished by decades of retelling, made Harrison a compelling candidate.
