Description

This token from Hartford, Connecticut dates to 1840, placing it at the tail end of the Hard Times era when the economy was beginning to recover from the worst effects of the Panic of 1837. Hartford was an important commercial and insurance center in the Connecticut River valley, and its merchants participated in the broader New England token economy during the crisis years. Hartford's economy in 1840 was transitioning from traditional commerce to the insurance and financial services industry that would define the city's identity for the next two centuries. The Hartford Fire Insurance Company (founded 1810) and Aetna Insurance Company (founded 1819) were already established, and the city's growing reputation as a center for risk management attracted financial capital and professional talent. Connecticut played a significant role in Hard Times token production, as the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury was one of the largest token manufacturers in the country. Scovill produced tokens for merchants across the eastern United States, and Connecticut merchants had easy access to this local manufacturing capability, which may explain the relatively high number of Connecticut pieces in the Hard Times catalog.
