Description
This copper William Henry Harrison campaign token from the 1840 election represents one of the most collected categories of American political numismatics. The Harrison-Tyler campaign produced more medalets, tokens, and campaign pieces than any previous American election, establishing precedents that would define political campaigning for the next century. Harrison's campaign strategy was revolutionary in its populist appeal. Despite Harrison's actual background as a member of the Virginia planter aristocracy, the Whigs successfully presented him as a humble frontier soldier—a log-cabin-dwelling, cider-drinking common man in contrast to the supposedly aristocratic Van Buren with his gold spoons and champagne. This narrative inversion, amplified through mass-produced campaign items, proved devastatingly effective. The 1840 campaign tokens served a dual purpose in the Hard Times context. While genuine coinage remained scarce from the lingering effects of the Panic of 1837, these political tokens circulated as both campaign advertisements and emergency currency. Voters received a political message with every commercial transaction, embedding campaign propaganda into the fabric of daily economic life.
