(1837) Token HT-M19, (c.1900-06) CHICAGO IL
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Dated 1837, this copper Hard Times token () is cataloged in the miscellaneous or unattributed section of the Rulau reference. Hard Times tokens were privately struck copper and brass pieces produced during the economic upheaval of the 1830s and 1840s, serving as both political commentary and substitute small change during severe coin shortages. The miscellaneous Hard Times tokens include pieces that do not fit neatly into the political (HT-1 to HT-80) or merchant advertising (HT-81+) categories. Some represent commemorative or patriotic themes, while others remain unattributed to specific issuers or political campaigns. These tokens are nonetheless part of the broader Hard Times token tradition and provide additional insight into the material culture of Jacksonian-era America. All Hard Times tokens share the historical context of the Panic of 1837, triggered by Andrew Jackson's Specie Circular and the closure of the Second Bank of the United States. The resulting depression drove the production of thousands of different token varieties across the eastern United States.
Rarity Notes
is part of the extensive Hard Times token series cataloged by Russell Rulau. Condition varies considerably, as these tokens circulated alongside official coinage during the economic depression of the late 1830s and early 1840s.
