Description

This silver variety from the Van Buren / Not One Cent subseries represents another precious-metal striking produced for the collector market rather than commercial circulation. The 29mm diameter is the largest in this subseries, suggesting the use of a different die pair or collar than the standard 28-28.5mm varieties. The Van Buren association in the Not One Cent series provided Whig propagandists with their most direct target. While the earlier Liberty Head versions (HT-35 to HT-52) attacked Jackson's policies through anonymous symbolism, the Van Buren-specific tokens named the incumbent president directly, making the political critique personal and immediate. This evolution from symbolic to personal attack reflected the deepening bitterness of partisan politics during the extended depression of 1837-1843. Silver tokens from this period are extremely difficult to locate and authenticate, as the passage of nearly two centuries has introduced various forms of alteration, cleaning, and misattribution. Collectors rely on third-party grading services to verify both the authenticity and composition of precious-metal Hard Times Token varieties, and certified examples command substantial premiums over raw, uncertified pieces.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. Silver Van Buren / Not One Cent tokens are among the most elusive pieces in the series.
