Description

This silver variety of the 1837 Liberty / Not One Cent token is another precious-metal striking from the proliferous die variety series. Silver examples of HT-41 were produced in extremely limited quantities and represent the elite tier of Hard Times Token collecting. The consistent production of silver strikings across multiple die varieties in the Liberty/Not One Cent series indicates an organized effort to create a comprehensive set of presentation pieces, for distribution among political leaders or for sale to the numismatic community that was then emerging in the United States. The American Numismatic Society, founded in 1858, was still two decades away, but informal collecting networks and dealer-collector relationships existed that created demand for special strikings. Silver Liberty/Not One Cent tokens collectively form one of the most challenging and rewarding collecting pursuits in American exonumia. Building a complete set of silver varieties across the eighteen-plus die combinations would require decades of patient searching and substantial financial resources, as individual examples rarely appear on the market and command significant premiums when they do.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. Silver strikings are among the most elusive pieces in the entire Hard Times Token series.
