(1837) Token HT-40B, Liberty - Not One Cent
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This variety of the 1837 Liberty / Not One Cent token is struck in an unrecorded or unrecorded composition, distinguished from the standard copper and silver versions by its planchet material. The exact alloy has not been conclusively determined in published references, making this a particularly unusual piece in the Liberty Head subseries. Tokens of unrecorded composition in the Hard Times series may represent experimental strikings on non-standard planchets, contemporary counterfeits made from available scrap metal, or legitimate productions on planchets whose alloy defies easy classification. Some such pieces may be made of German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy), pewter, or other alloys that do not fall neatly into the standard copper/brass/silver/white metal categories. The existence of pieces in unusual or unidentified compositions adds to the complexity of cataloging the Hard Times Token series. Researchers continue to refine the identification and classification of these pieces as advanced metallurgical analysis techniques become available, and future editions of standard references may provide more definitive composition data for varieties currently listed as unrecorded.
