(1837) Token HT-40A, Liberty - Not One Cent
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver striking of the 1837 Liberty / Not One Cent token is another extremely rare precious-metal variant from the series. Like HT-39A, this silver piece was produced for a specialized market of collectors and political enthusiasts rather than for daily commerce. The E PLURIBUS UNUM banner appears on the obverse, identifying this as part of the larger subgroup that includes HT-38 through HT-52 in copper. The die combination used for this silver striking differs from HT-39A in specific diagnostic features of both obverse and reverse dies. These differences may include variations in the positioning of stars around Liberty's head, the size and style of the date numerals, the arrangement of berries and leaves in the reverse wreath, and the presence or absence of a line under "CENT" — a particularly important diagnostic in the Liberty/Not One Cent subseries. Silver Hard Times Tokens demonstrate the sophistication of the era's numismatic market. Even during a period of severe economic hardship, there existed a community of collectors willing to pay premiums for special strikings of current tokens, just as modern collectors seek proof and special-issue versions of contemporary coinage. This nascent numismatic market helped ensure the preservation of scarce varieties that might otherwise have been lost.
Rarity Notes
