(1837) Token HT-240A, New York NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This variant of the Centre Market accommodation token differs from HT-240 in edge type, metal, or die state. Like the primary issue, it depicts the public market building in the 14th Ward with the Liberty Head obverse and "CENTRE MARKET ACCOMMODATION" reverse inscription. New York's public market system in the 1830s was governed by city regulations that specified operating hours, vendor licensing, and quality standards. Markets like Centre Market operated from early morning through midday, when butchers, fishmongers, and produce sellers offered their wares under the market house's covered stalls. The market master, a city-appointed official, maintained order and enforced regulations, while vendors competed for the best stall locations nearest the market's entrances. The token's dual function as both an accommodation piece and a circulating cent substitute reflects the practical economics of the Hard Times. When genuine copper cents were scarce, any token with identifiable backing—particularly one associated with an established institution like a public market—could serve as emergency currency, accepted by merchants who trusted the issuing institution's ability to redeem the pieces.
