(1836) Token HT-320, New York NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver Squire & Merritt token from 1836 is distinguished from the standard copper issues by its precious metal composition. Silver tokens from the Hard Times era are considerably scarcer than their copper counterparts, as the higher material cost limited production and the intrinsic value discouraged casual circulation. Silver pieces were produced as presentation items for valued ship captains, business associates, or as special-order pieces for collectors. The silver composition places this token among the most desirable merchant Hard Times Tokens. While the copper varieties circulated freely along South Street's waterfront, the silver version would have been reserved for special occasions — given to a loyal customer or displayed as evidence of the firm's prosperity and standing in the maritime supply trade. Squire & Merritt's production of silver tokens alongside their extensive copper series demonstrates the firm's sophistication. A ship chandlery dealing daily with vessel outfitting contracts worth hundreds or thousands of dollars had the financial resources to commission premium token varieties, and the maritime business community appreciated such gestures of commercial prestige.
