Coin Details
Description
This variant of the Kohn, Daron & Co. token shares the "Good For One Load" redemptive function of HT-431. The variant may differ in die state, metal, or edge treatment from the primary issue. Both pieces are attributed to New Orleans, where the firm operated a hauling or delivery business during the Hard Times era. New Orleans' unique geography—situated on the Mississippi River delta with streets frequently at or below water level—created particular challenges for overland transportation. Drayage firms navigated the city's notoriously muddy streets, moving goods between the levee, the French Market, and commercial establishments throughout the French Quarter and American sector. The physical difficulty of this work, combined with New Orleans' subtropical climate, made hauling one of the most demanding occupations in the city. Load tokens like the Kohn, Daron & Co. pieces represent a practical commercial innovation. By selling tokens redeemable for future deliveries, the firm could collect payment in advance—particularly valuable during the Hard Times when credit was unreliable and cash scarce. Customers benefited from the convenience of pre-paid delivery service, and the firm gained working capital to maintain its horses, wagons, and workforce.
