Coin Details
Description
This 1835 copper token from West Troy (now Watervliet), New York extends the Bucklin token series across the Hudson River from Troy proper. West Troy was a manufacturing community adjacent to Troy that shared the larger city's commercial infrastructure while maintaining its own municipal identity. The token's West Troy attribution connects it to Isaac Bucklin's broader business network in the upper Hudson Valley. West Troy's proximity to Troy — separated only by the Hudson River — meant that commercial tokens circulated freely between the two communities. Bucklin's advertising reach extended across both sides of the river, and his Interest Tables and Book Keeping publications served the business community of the entire upper Hudson Valley region. The West Troy attribution is relatively unusual in the Hard Times Token series, where Troy proper dominates the upper Hudson Valley representation. This token documents commercial activity in a community that was important for the Watervliet Arsenal and various manufacturing enterprises but is often overlooked in favor of its larger neighbor across the river.
