(1835) Token HT-181A, Taunton MA
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This variant of the John J. Adams brush manufacturer token from Taunton, Massachusetts differs from HT-181 in edge type, metal, or die state. Like the primary issue, it advertises Adams' comprehensive brush manufacturing business at 11 Main Street, where he produced and sold every type of brush at both wholesale and retail. Taunton's location on the Taunton River provided water power for manufacturing and access to New Bedford and Providence for raw material imports and finished goods distribution. The town's industrial character was well established by the 1830s, with iron foundries, silver manufacturers, and various light industries operating alongside traditional crafts like brush-making. Adams competed in a market where factory-produced brushes were beginning to challenge traditional hand-made production. The variant may differ in the treatment of the stock pig obverse die or in the reverse die's condition. Over time, dies wore from repeated striking, developing cracks, rust, and surface deterioration that created visually distinct impressions. These progressive die states are cataloged as separate varieties, allowing collectors to trace the chronological sequence of a token's production run.
