Description
This 1835 copper Gustin & Blake token is a second die variety from the Vermont firm, sharing the same merchant attribution as HT-433 but produced from different dies. The existence of two die combinations indicates either a production volume sufficient to wear out the first die pair, or a deliberate decision to produce a second variety — incorporating corrections or improvements to the original design. The two Gustin & Blake varieties (HT-433 and HT-434) together form the core of Vermont's representation in the Hard Times Token merchant category. While politically active Vermont residents are also represented in the political token section of the series — where anti-Jackson and pro-Whig sentiments were common in the Green Mountain State — merchant tokens from Vermont are uncommon enough to be notable additions to any Hard Times Token collection. Die variety analysis of the Gustin & Blake tokens can reveal whether both were produced by the same manufacturer. If the letter punches, numerals, and decorative elements match between the two varieties, they were cut by the same die sinker as part of a single production order. Differences in punch selection would suggest either different manufacturers or production at different times.
