Description

This 1835-1844 token is a variant of the Wm. H. Milton & Co. series from Boston, a silvered copper or white metal version of the standard copper HT-164. The premium composition distinguished this piece from the standard copper issues and was produced for special distribution to valued customers, business contacts, or trade exhibitions where a more refined appearance was desirable. Milton's production of tokens in multiple compositions follows a pattern seen among Boston and Massachusetts merchants who had access to the metalworking capabilities of the Attleboro jewelry district. The ability to produce tokens in copper, silvered copper, and white metal was a standard capability for firms familiar with the finishing techniques used in jewelry and button manufacturing. The variant compositions in the Milton series create collecting depth for specialists pursuing complete sets. Each composition variant adds visual variety to a display set and documents the manufacturing versatility of the New England metalworking firms that produced these tokens.
