Coin Details
Description
This 1834 copper token from S.L. Wilkins of Massachusetts advertises a merchant who operated in the early 1830s manufacturing or retail trade. The token follows the standard format established by other Massachusetts issuers — a cent-sized copper planchet with the merchant's identification on the reverse and a Liberty Head obverse design. The 1834 date places it among the early Hard Times Token issues. S.L. Wilkins' token is part of the substantial Massachusetts contingent in the Hard Times Token series. The state's combination of manufacturing capability, commercial sophistication, and entrepreneurial culture produced more token varieties than any state except New York. Massachusetts merchants understood the advertising value of tokens and had access to the metalworking firms — particularly in Attleboro — that could produce them efficiently and inexpensively. The token's copper composition and standard weight (approximately 10.5 grams) ensured it would be accepted interchangeably with U.S. large cents in retail transactions. This interchangeability was essential to the token's dual function as advertising medium and circulating currency substitute.
