(1833) Token HT-428A, Providence RI
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This variant of the Ephraim A. Hathaway coal dealer token from Providence, Rhode Island differs from the common HT-428 in edge type, metal, or die state. The primary issue depicts a fireplace on the obverse with "City Coal Yard Providence, R.I." and identifies Hathaway as a dealer in anthracite and bituminous coal on the reverse. The original HT-428 is among the more common Hard Times tokens (Rarity R-1). Hathaway's City Coal Yard served Providence's growing industrial and domestic heating needs during the 1830s. The token distinguishes between anthracite (hard coal from Pennsylvania, prized for its clean, hot burn) and bituminous (soft coal, cheaper but smokier), indicating Hathaway stocked both grades to serve different customer needs. Anthracite was preferred for domestic heating in cities where smoke pollution was becoming a concern, while bituminous served industrial boilers and furnaces. The variant designation on HT-428A indicates a production difference from the abundantly produced base type. Given the R-1 rarity of HT-428 (indicating thousands of specimens survive), the Hathaway tokens had one of the largest production runs among Hard Times merchant pieces, reflecting both coal's essential nature and Hathaway's aggressive marketing strategy.
