Description

This 1833 silvered copper token is the premium composition variant of the Francis L. Brigham series from New Bedford, Massachusetts. The silver coating applied over the copper planchet gave this piece a more refined appearance compared to the standard copper HT-175 and HT-176 issues, distinguishing it as a special production intended for a different distribution purpose or audience. New Bedford's prosperity in the 1830s derived primarily from the whaling industry, which generated enormous wealth for ship owners, merchants, and the broader community that supported the whaling fleet. Francis Brigham's token advertising program — including this premium silvered copper variety — reflects the commercial ambitions of a merchant operating in one of America's wealthiest per-capita communities. Silvered copper tokens from Massachusetts merchants are consistently scarcer than their plain copper counterparts, reflecting more limited production of the premium composition. The silvering process added cost to each piece, making large production runs uneconomical. Surviving specimens with well-preserved silvering are particularly valued by collectors for their visual appeal and relative rarity.
