Description

This fire-gilt bronze Sansom Medal, cataloged as GW-58, is an original striking of the famous Washington retirement medal designed by John Reich. The fire-gilt finish, achieved by applying a mercury-gold amalgam to the bronze surface and then heating the piece to drive off the mercury and bond the gold to the metal, gives this example a warm golden appearance that simulates solid gold at a fraction of the cost. Fire gilding was a prestigious finishing technique reserved for special presentations and distinguished collectors, and fire-gilt Sansom Medals are among the most visually striking versions of this iconic design. The obverse presents Reich's refined neoclassical portrait of Washington in civilian dress, while the reverse depicts the Cincinnatus scene of Washington returning to his plow after surrendering power. Joseph Sansom commissioned this medal through the Philadelphia Mint circa 1805, and the original strikings are distinguished from later restrikes by die state characteristics and production quality. Fire-gilt bronzes represent a middle ground between ordinary bronze and solid gold or silver examples, combining visual elegance with relative affordability.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Fire-gilt examples of the original Sansom Medal are significantly scarcer than plain bronze versions. The gilding process was applied to only a small number of specimens. Examples with well-preserved gilding are especially valuable.
