Description
The Washington Success medal in large-size bronze with reeded edge is the edge variant companion to the plain-edge large Success token, both produced in England during the 1790s. The reeded edge was applied during striking using a collar die, a technique that distinguishes this variety from the plain-edge version struck without a constraining collar. The obverse carries the same crude but recognizable bust of Washington facing right with the legend SUCCESS TO THE UNITED STATES arranged around the border, while the reverse displays an heraldic eagle with spread wings. The reeding on the edge gives this variant a more finished, coin-like appearance compared to its plain-edge sibling, and some researchers have indicated that the reeded-edge pieces may represent a slightly later or more refined production run. Birmingham manufacturers produced numerous Washington-themed pieces during the 1790s, capitalizing on American demand for medallic portraits of the popular president. The large Success tokens, at approximately 34mm in diameter, are substantially bigger than the small-module versions and were intended as commemorative pieces or store cards rather than as circulating small change. This edge variety is an essential component of any comprehensive Washington token collection.
Rarity Notes
Moderately scarce. The large reeded-edge variety is somewhat more available than the plain-edge version but remains infrequently offered in higher grades. Most examples show honest wear.
