Description
This 1781 silver medal (Betts-594) struck from original dies is the silver version of the William Washington at Cowpens Comitia Americana medal. Silver original dies strikings of the Comitia Americana medals are among the most desirable pieces in American numismatics, combining original production status with precious metal composition. The medal was engraved by Augustin Dupre, one of the finest medal engravers in French history, who produced several of the Comitia Americana designs. William Washington's cavalry charge at Cowpens was one of the decisive moments of the Southern Campaign, and this medal was Congress's official recognition of his valor. The Betts series documents the full arc of European colonialism in the Western Hemisphere, from the earliest Spanish exploration medals through the diplomatic pieces marking American independence. Silver originals are significantly rarer than bronze originals or any restrike.
