Description
This 1779 bronze medal commemorates the vindication of Admiral Augustus Keppel following his court-martial and acquittal after the Battle of Ushant in 1778. Keppel, a Whig opposition member, was charged by a government supporter after the inconclusive battle against the French fleet. His acquittal on February 11, 1779, was celebrated with illuminations and medal production. American patriots also celebrated the verdict as a repudiation of the government prosecuting the war against the colonies. The secondary market for American medals has become increasingly sophisticated, with specialized auction houses, dealer networks, and online platforms connecting buyers and sellers across a global collector community. This dated version complements the undated Keppel Victory medal (PCGS #926067), specifically documenting the 1779 vindication during the height of the Revolutionary War when Britain fought America, France, and soon Spain simultaneously.
