Description

A beaver standing in a stream and gnawing at a palm tree, with four mountain peaks and three more trees behind, is the obverse of HK-863, ringed by the word "Perseverando," which means by persevering. Professor Dickeson borrowed the vignette from the six-dollar bills the Continental Congress issued from 1775 to 1778. His reverses recall sessions of the Second Continental Congress and the sum of paper currency authorized at each; this one reads "Seal / Whole Amount / Issued. / 3.000.000 / May 10th" inside the border legend "Continental Currency. * 1775 *." Hibler and Kappen list it in white metal at 39 mm as DeLorey Dickeson 4, with a thick copper striking of the same pair as HK-863a. The same obverse turns up with a November 29th reverse (HK-863b) and an April 11th, 1778, reverse (HK-863d).
