Description
This 1760 silver medal (Betts-430) is the silver version of the Canada Subdued medal, commemorating the British conquest of French Canada with the fall of Montreal. The silver composition elevates this above the bronze version (PCGS #613481) in both material value and collectibility. The fall of Montreal in September 1760 was the culmination of a multi-year British campaign that began with the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 and Quebec in 1759. General Amherst coordinated three separate armies converging on Montreal from different directions, leaving the French no option but surrender. Collectors have pursued Betts medals since the nineteenth century, when numismatists first recognized these pieces as a coherent body of historical documentation worthy of systematic study and cataloging. This silver medal was produced for a more exclusive audience than the bronze, commemorating what contemporary observers recognized as one of the most significant territorial transfers in modern history.
Rarity Notes
