Description
This 1760 bronze medal (Betts-430) commemorates the theme of "Canada Subdued," marking the completion of the British conquest of French Canada with the fall of Montreal on September 8, 1760. After Wolfe's capture of Quebec in 1759, the remaining French forces under the Chevalier de Levis made a final stand but were overwhelmed by three converging British armies under General Jeffrey Amherst. The surrender of Montreal ended over 150 years of French colonial rule in Canada and transferred the vast territory to British control. The "Canada Subdued" medal celebrates this momentous geopolitical shift, which removed France as a colonial power in North America and created the conditions that would ultimately lead to American independence. Bronze medals were produced for wide distribution to commemorate the event.
