1721 Medal Betts-148
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1721 medal, Betts-148, commemorates the fortification of Guadeloupe. Guadeloupe, one of France's most valuable Caribbean colonies, was an important sugar-producing island that required substantial military fortification to defend against English and Dutch attack. The year 1721 saw continued French investment in Caribbean colonial defenses following the end of the Mississippi Bubble crisis. Despite the financial turmoil in France, colonial administrators recognized that protecting valuable sugar islands was essential to the economic recovery of the empire. The survival rate of colonial-era medals varies dramatically by material and original production quantity, with gold presentations being the rarest and bronze issues struck in larger quantities being relatively more available to collectors. The medal documents French military investment in the Caribbean at a time when colonial revenues were desperately needed to help stabilize the French economy.
