(1702) Gilt Bronze Medal Betts-95, Vigo Bay
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Betts-95 in gilt bronze occupies the middle tier between the plain bronze and silver versions of this Vigo Bay medal design. The gilt finish applies a thin layer of gold over the bronze surface, creating an appearance that mimics solid gold at a fraction of the cost. Gilt bronze medals were typically produced for presentation to officials, diplomats, or prominent individuals who merited something more distinguished than standard bronze but for whom a precious-metal striking was not warranted. The Battle of Vigo Bay in 1702 was one of the defining moments of the War of the Spanish Succession's opening campaign, and the gilt bronze version of Betts-95 would have been an appropriate gift for a government minister, military officer, or foreign dignitary. The gilding process was carefully controlled to produce a uniform golden surface that would patinate gracefully over time, and surviving examples often show partial gilding where the gold layer has worn to reveal the bronze beneath.
Rarity Notes
Gilt bronze, fewer produced than plain bronze. Partial gilding common on survivors. Scarce variant within Betts-95.
