Description
This 1690 medal, Betts-71, is another variety of the Quebec Preserved commemorative series. This variety presents the defense of Quebec from a different artistic perspective than the other numbered varieties. The 1690 siege of Quebec was conducted by Sir William Phips, who had achieved fame for salvaging the Silver Shoals treasure in 1687. His attack on Quebec was part of a coordinated English colonial campaign against New France, with a land force advancing along the Lake Champlain corridor while Phips' fleet approached by sea. The medallic record of colonial America provides evidence that standard historical accounts sometimes overlook, documenting diplomatic encounters, treaty negotiations, and military engagements through the perspectives of the participating European powers. The land force turned back before reaching Montreal, and Phips' naval assault was repulsed, leaving Quebec firmly in French hands and securing the northern frontier of New France.
