Description

Betts-69 is another medal in the Quebec Preserved series, commemorating the French defense of Quebec against Sir William Phips's New England expedition in October 1690. This bronze version presents the standard copper alloy striking of the design. The Quebec Preserved medals (Betts-68 through Betts-76) form one of the most extensive groups in the Betts catalog, reflecting the enormous significance the French placed on holding Quebec as the key to their North American empire. Phips sailed from Boston with approximately 2,000 colonial militia, but Frontenac's determined defense and the onset of harsh weather forced the English to withdraw. The failure devastated the New England colonies financially and demonstrated that France would not easily be dislodged from Canada. Multiple medal varieties were struck in Paris to celebrate the victory, each with variations in design, legend, or composition, creating a rich collecting field within the broader Betts series.

Rarity Notes
