Description
This 1670 silver medal, Betts-44, commemorates the colonization efforts of France in the New World during the reign of Louis XIV. By 1670, New France was experiencing significant growth under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's finance minister, who implemented mercantilist policies designed to make the colonies profitable. The year saw continued French expansion along the Great Lakes and Mississippi River system, with explorers and missionaries pushing ever deeper into the continental interior. Medallic commemoration of colonial events was not limited to military victories — treaties, explorations, trading company foundings, missionary activities, and colonial administrative milestones all received medallic recognition. This silver medal documents French colonial ambitions at a moment when the foundations were being laid for an empire that would eventually stretch from Quebec to New Orleans, encompassing the vast heart of North America.
